Collection of Photos from the Westgate Attack Vol. 2

Warning: Very graphic images.

My heart is saddened by the events unfolding in Africa, Kenya, Nairobi, Westlands, Westgate Mall. As of the President's press statement yesterday, 39 lives had been lost and over 150 injured. The number must have increased by now. I have made a collection of photos from all over the net. Mostly from NTV and Buzzfeed. They were taken by journalists who were at the scene of the crime.

Kindly be warned that some of the photos are very graphic so faint-hearted readers should not proceed from here.

I will add more photos as I get hold of them............................................

Workplace Gossip

I was doing my random online reads when I came across an article of a staff complaining about gossiping colleagues. The situation sounded so familiar and I believe this happens in a majority of offices if not all. There is almost always that one or two people who fit this profile so well, you would think the writer is writing about them. It got me thinking on the emotional torture the person writing the mail went through to the extent of resigning. Gossiping can undermine morale and cause productivity losses.

This article made me do some research of my own on information available online. The result was overwhelming. I however made a summary of what to do in the event you are in such a situation. There are so many other article available freely online that might help. I picked this from a small sample

Disclaimer: These solutions are not my work but a compilation from several articles I read online

Kevin Johnston writer for Ameriprise Financial and Rant Finance gave an outline of ways to confront gossiping in the office.
  • Step 1 - Acknowledge the gossip. Ignoring gossip can actually ruin your career. If the gossip is about you, it can grow into a fact in some people's minds, and you will not be able to undo it. The best approach is to openly say that you have heard the gossip. Letting the gossipers know you are on to them can stifle the rumors.
  • Step 2 - This is for Managers/Team Leads. Announce or reiterate your policy. Call a meeting and go over the company policy regarding gossip. Let your workforce know you do not take gossip lightly, and that you not only consider it detrimental to a positive work environment, you consider it a threat to productivity and the bottom line. Make the consequences for gossiping clear, up to and including termination for repeat offenders.
  • Step 3 - Confront the gossiper directly. Don't use the word "you." Instead say that there are rumors in the office and they are disturbing. This will allow the person doing the gossiping to save face while getting the message that you know who the culprit is and that further action will be taken if it continues.
  • Step 4 - Communicate clearly. Gossip starts in the workplace when employees don't know what is happening with the business. You can avoid rumors about the demise of the business, layoffs or declining sales by simply stating the truth clearly and openly. Answer all questions honestly in a meeting and employees will have no reason to gossip.

There are other ways to deal with gossip as outlined below
  • Don't take office gossip to heart. A lot of office gossip is just that - gossip. It is filled with innuendo, rumors, errors and even deliberately malicious nonsense. Take it with a pinch of salt rather than reacting personally or defensively. There is no doubt that gossip must be dealt with strongly and immediately but it will not help your situation as a team leader or colleague to take it personally. Focus instead on the reality that there is an underlying reason or series of reasons causing the gossip and focus on dealing with it objectively as a task rather than as a personal attack to be foiled in an emotional or angry manner.
  • Arm yourself with the facts. Is there truth to the tall tales? Sometimes there is a kernel of truth and this should be uncovered before addressing the problem so that you are well placed to respond with facts rather than emotions.
  • Challenge a personal gossiper directly. Some people gossip because they enjoy it or they feel insecure about others in the workplace. Most gossipers are pure attention-seekers. A persistent and long-term gossiper must be stopped in their tracks by calling their bluff. View such people as attention-seekers and give them some attention within limits by hearing them out in a closed-door meeting.
  • Don't participate in office gossip. If you participate in office gossip, you perpetuate it and you belittle yourself. In particular, if you have leadership aspirations, or you are already in a position of leadership, any participation in office gossip by you will be viewed negatively and as anti-team spirited. Always ask yourself about your motivation when discussing others in a personal way within the work context; if you are talking about them to ingratiate yourself with others or to make yourself appear better, then it is likely that you are gossiping.

Whether you have been the one gossiping or you've been gossiped about, it's important that you learn how to deal with gossip, and how problematic it can really be. It doesn't matter whether gossip is true or false, it still has no place at work.

The negative effects of gossip are strained relationships, mistrust, discontentment, even anger, and decreased productivity. For example, how much time have you wasted, in long conversations, complaining to others about the assistant who isn't as helpful as he could be, or your partner who isn't as loving as you'd like, or how you know that that other department has a hidden agenda, that conflicts with your team's goals!

Most of us intuitively realize that people who are gossips, do not have an inner world that is healthy and rich.

Do you get, that if someone is a workplace gossip, it is because they feel insecure/inadequate? And/or they have a low sense of self-worth, and are desperate to find some way of feeling better about themselves.

Contrast this with a person why shies away from gossip ... these people are too busy focusing on being the best they can, on making their personal dent in the universe.

Think of someone you know who seems to stay away from workplace gossip.

Would you say that that person is fairly secure within their own self?
Is this a person who seems to have a good sense of their own self?
Is this person quite successful?
Do others look upon him or her with high regard and is s/he well liked?
Is this a happy person?

Contrast that with a person who is a known workplace gossip.

Does this person seem to constantly try to find fault with others to make him or herself look better?
Is this person well liked and trusted?
Is the vibe around this person pleasant or unpleasant?
Do you think this is a happy person?

Have you ever tried going seven days without talking about another person, period?
Try it, but don't be surprised if you can't get past the first hour without finding yourself talking about someone who isn't a part of the conversation! But that doesn't mean you stop trying. Eventually you will learn how not to gossip......................

The Top 10 Reasons People Hate Their Job

The author is Ilya Pozin, CEO of Open Me; Columnist for Inc, Forbes & LinkedIn; Serial Entrepreneur; Founder of Ciplex; Gadget lover; '30 Under 30' entrepreneur

Here are the top 10 reasons your employee’s full-time job may be hating their job:

10. They think the grass is greener someplace else. If your employee’s friends are having an amazing experience at another company, why wouldn't they be envious? The transparency of employee benefits and perks at other companies can sometimes lead your employees to dream about working elsewhere.

Keep an eye on what other companies are doing and try to match where you can. Sure, your company’s perks aren't going to be on par with Google, but why not try to give your employees something worth bragging about? They’ll be more motivated, eager to spread the good word, and you’ll benefit from an improved company culture.

9. Their values don’t align with the company. Dissatisfaction is bound to take place if your employees aren’t sold on the same things you are. If your company values creativity and collaboration, it’s in your best interest to make screening for these values a mandatory part of your hiring process. Regular feedback and reviews can help you stay in tune with employees’ values and how they align with what the company needs and values most.

8. They don’t feel valued. If you aren't taking the time to pat your employees on the back, it’s bound to impact employee happiness. Recognition breeds feelings of value and loyalty. What are you doing to show your employees they’re valued members of the company? This doesn't mean giving monetary rewards for every accomplishment--instead, regularly utilize verbal praise and offer the occasional gift or reward for awesome performance.

7. Job insecurity. It’s easy to dislike your job when you’re worried whether you will still have it a few months or a year from now. If your company is going through hard times, the instability may be taking a toll on your employees. Remain transparent and work on keeping spirits high and your team engaged...or they might end up leaving you out of fear.

6. There’s no room for advancement. What’s your company’s policy for promotions? Many employees end up feeling stuck when there’s no chance of advancing within their company. This often leads to job hopping. Your company may be small, but it’s important to create a plan for employees to grow with you.

5. They’re unhappy with their pay. Nothing extinguishes passion quite like the feeling of being paid less than you deserve. Evaluating the salaries of your employees can be unrealistic at certain times, but you should consider asking your employee what they feel they should be making -- their honesty may surprise you.

4. There’s too much red tape. Rules may be ruining your team. Nothing is more frustrating than being unable to make your own decisions. Boost the autonomy of your employees by giving them room to accomplish goals. This establishes a healthy level of trust, productivity, and benefits the company as a whole.

3. They’re not being challenged. Your employees are on a constant search to advance their skills and improve through their work with you. A lack of meaningful, challenging work is certain to breed disdain. Find out whether your employees feel like they’re learning or advancing their knowledge. If they’re not becoming better, they will go someplace where they feel they can improve.

2. The passion’s gone. There’s a huge difference between living to work and working to live. Do your employees love what they do? The current job climate has led many people to take on jobs they don’t love. Focus on hiring thoroughly passionate employees and giving them a purpose to maintain their passion throughout their time on the job.

1. Their boss sucks. Poor management can ruin even the most passionate and well-paid employees love for their job. Don’t let your awful management and leadership skills ruin the drive of your workforce. Do you micromanage and criticize? Are you a bad communicator? If you have unhappy employees, the first thing you should look at is your management habits. The next thing to do is actually talk to your employees to get to the bottom of the problem.

Brushing off unhappy employees will damage your company. Get to the bottom of their troubles before you lose a valuable employee.

BBA Update Day 1

By now we know Huddah and Annabel are representing Kenya in the Big Bro House. This is the update from BB House today.

Kenya’s Huddah, Uganda’s Denzel and Ghana’s Elikem received the highest number of nominations in Diamond House. Huddah led the pack with seven Nominations followed closely by Denzel with six and Elikem with four.

The Housemates charged Huddah for being shallow-minded, self-centred and inconsiderate while it seems Denzel has no respect for women, tries too hard and not much of a team player. Elikem on the other hand was shot for being too bossy as well as being a strong competitor in the game.

I guess our twitter Huddah is the same Huddah all-over

Dida's most memorable punchlines: From News24.Com

1.      If you want to be healthy, eat when you feel pangs of hunger; I do not know who brought these eating schedules with lunch, and dinner. When you are hungry, you do not fill up your belly with food; you need a third of food, a third of water then the other third is for breathing space.

2.      The problem with Tana River is that leaders there are devil worshipers!

3.      I just expanded my class from 40 students to 40 million Kenyans. I want to teach them that they cannot survive on hide and seek games, cry when people cry and laugh when people laugh.

4.      Shikuku used to say that during the KANU regime, what was eaten up used to trickle down. Under this government, they eat more than KANU and nothing trickles down.

5.      If Raila is true to his principles of social democracy, how comes many of the people he associated with in the Pentagon have left his team? You cannot start a team of 5 then end up with 4 against you. That’s not social democracy!

6.      If your football team is losing then you change their uniform, you haven't solved the problem.

7.      According to the culture of justice, if you are suspected of any crime, you step aside. And once your name is cleared, you step back. Why is it different with this... Uhuru Kenyatta and friends?

8.      How do you pay KES 14.73 billion to 3 650 officers and you pay KES 7 billion to 500 000 teachers? Is that fair?

9.      People with kids in private schools want to make the public schools better! How? You can talk about children when you have them. How many of you have children in public schools?

10.  I come from a time when the title Mwalimu was respectable. Now, every child in school has a lawyer and you all know lawyers are funny people. We have to restore the dignity and respect of teachers so as to be sure of quality education.

11.  This issue of tribalism is a factor contributed to by 5 percent of the community leaders who want to connect with the leading (Elite) class.

12.  Somebody with a PhD in electricity would rather spend the night in the dark but a class 8 drop - out will fix it.

13.  It's a shame that we are still treating jiggers and learning how to wash hands.

14.  Every person has a unique character and we must exploit this uniqueness for the progress of this country.

15.  In terms of thoughts, my party is very old.

16.  I’m not telling you to vote for me, am just saying that you should vote for the right person.

The Presidential Debate 2013 : Part 2

JULIE: Why did the CHICKEN cross the road??

DIDA: Its about time we started teaching Chicken the values of NOT crossing roads. Its better to stay on one side of the road than the other. Suppose it was knocked down by a speeding car! What would it have said? That's the kind of Chicken that would vote for Waititu.

KIYAPI: It depends with WHERE the chicken was going. Crossing the road is NOT the end of the story. I resigned from the Education Ministry to fight for the rights of Everyone! Chickens included! If a chicken wants to cross the road, let it cross the road! That's what my party RBK stands for!

UHURU: The JUBILEE government will ensure a 24-hour Economy where a chicken will NOT have to cross ANY road in search for jobs. I will create jobs right where the chicken is standing... And the ONLY time a chicken leaves the work station, is maybe when its going to answer charges at the ICC.

KENNETH: I was born in Bahati. We used to call it, "Bahaa.....", I went to Starehe, where we used to each chicken every weekend. And am sorry,I think we ate that chicken too. Anyway, dont worry, My Government will create another chicken within the first 100 days...

MUDAVADI: Did YOU mention a CHICKEN?? Julie Gichuru, did You JUST mention a chicken?? Wait, Is that chicken here??! Am sorry but I think we are NOT supposed to be discussing a chicken. We should be EATING it!

KARUA: I believe in Integrity. I pushed so hard for that chicken to stay ON one side of the road. But the two principals failed to convince their troops to stop the chicken from crossing. The constitution is clear on the role of chickens. And My government will NOT only bring back the chicken, I will also close down that road!

RAILA: Chickens are just chickens. That is the kind of chicken that owns huge tracts of land on the other side of the road! As a chicken,I believe You should stay in one place! Not crossing roads every now and then! You cant lay eggs through Skype.

MUITE: The Safina Government will get down to the bottom of the matter! You cannot convince Me,or any rational Kenyan, that that chicken was acting alone! NO! That chicken must have been sent by other chickens! You cannot tell me that other chickens were NOT aware that that chicken was crossing the road! Of course they were! And am NOT holding brief for that chicken, but My Government will investigate the matter and include more chickens in this whole 'Road-Crossing' Scandal!

*Julie faints and falls back, crushing to the floor*

*Ngilu wakes Up*

The same Question is asked to non-presidential candidates. Lets sample the answers:

WAITITU: First and Foremost, let me tell you Julie, the road that that chicken was crossing, wasn't even there last year. I created that road after re-claiming that land which had been grabbed. I still have a case in court regarding that road. As for the chicken, I swear I didn't incite it. I didn't!

SONKO: In Makadara, Chickens have always been crossing roads without being questioned. Why Now? Let me tell you,I am the one who paid school fees for that chicken and opened businesses for it! And am sure it didn't cross that road! The police are lying! I will file a court case to challenge that story!

MARY WAMBUI: I don't care whether that chicken crossed the road or NOT. The fact remains that I am the one who won the TNA nominations. The Othaya People are my Jehovah Witnesses.

MUTAHI NGUNYI: How many chickens are we talking about here? And how many roads are we talking about? According to the tyranny of numbers,I am sure that chicken didn't make it to the other side.

KAMENCHU: Let me ask you,was that chicken wearing an underwear??

ESTHER ARUNGA: I LOVE MY husband to death. And it doesn't matter whether you call him a chicken or not!

JIMMY GAIT: I support success. That chicken is a hard-working chicken. It understands that it has to make it or make it!

OCTOPIZZO: SWAG ni kuvuka barabara.

MAINA KAGENI : Why are chickens crossing the road so much these days? Is it because the cocks cannot satisfy them in bed? Should chickens cross roads in the first place? Talk to Me,my number is........

ROBERT ALAI: Here is that Chicken's number. 0720202020 .Call it and ask it why it crossed that road!

KABANDO WA KABANDO: That chicken must have been sponsored by CORD to cross the road. Why is it that ONLY Citizen T.V saw it crossing the road??

RABBIT(KAKA SUNGURA) : Kuku ikivuka baro, haifai kupigiwa kelele. Inafaa kupigiwa makofi za kilo....ADISIA. ...ADISIA....

Why voter registration is low

I read this in facebook also refered to as #MKZ by #KOT a while back and it got me going. I cant remember which page I read it from but I just had to share it. If you came up with the reasons, then kudos. You are creative. Allow me to share it.

Here is a few reasons why voter registration has been low

  1. Kisumu Voters, "We thought they'd create an iPhone App for registering online. You don't expect Us to burn fuel driving to a registration center don't you?"
  2. Mombasa Voters, "We wake up at 10 am, have breakfast till Midday, start preparing lunch at 1 pm, lunch is ready by 3 pm. We start eating. Lunch is over by 4 pm. We rest a bit. Its already 5.30 pm! When do we REGISTER?!!"
  3. Nairobi Voters, "You wake up at 5 am. Get stuck in traffic till 10 am. You have to extend office work past 5.30 pm. Get stuck in traffic AGAIN for 5 hours going home. When do I register???"
  4. Meru Voters, "If they can bring the IEBC guys right in our Miraa farms,we could register like crazy!"
  5. Machakos Voters, "You wake Up at 5 am to go looking for water. Come back home at 8 pm WITH NO WATER! Register, My ass!"
  6. Embu Voters, " People ARE REGISTERING??? WHERE?? For WHAT???
  7. Turkana Voters, "We are in KENYA??!! Oh, tell us about it!"
  8. Western Voters, "Its Bull-fighting season, duh?!! So, Me, WAFULA, Leave a Bull-fighting arena to go register??? Nikka preeeeĆ©ese!"
  9. Kalenjin Voters, "Everyone who is eligible to vote among us is busy training for a marathon!"
  10. Nyeri Voters, "We start domestic violence every 8 pm at night! And IT NEVER ENDS! So, basically we are too busy fighting to go register!"
  11. Garissa Voters, "5 YEARS ALREADY OVER??? God! We thought its 2010 !!!"

An Open Letter by Jalang'o to Kenyans

This is not my own research. I got this from Ghafla Kenya. But thought it was wise to share it to my readers. If only all Kenyans reasoned like Jalang'o then not just Kenya but the world at  large would be a better places.

It reads:

When I lived in Kibera, I shared my modest crib with Onyango,Kimani, Kipngeno,Mutisya and Abdi. Abdi and Kimani shared a bed because Abdi was new to the city. The only thing that seperated our "bedrooms" was a "leso", an old dirty bed sheet and a black polythene sheet that Mutisya had picked on his way from Industrial area.

We shared everything and we showered in shifts and on alternate Sundays. Life was hard but we were happy. Kimani pushed mkoko at Marigiti and in the evening he will come home with a mixture of almost everything that was sold at the market. From it, we made a stew. Everyday it tasted distinctly different and authentic even though the ingredients remained the same, the quantity varied. Sometimes the pilipili or dania will be in plenty hence the taste of the day. We listened to Kameme together and KBC salamu za hodi hodi together and shared ushindi bar soap for washing and geisha Kubwa for bathing. Played draught at weekends.

In short we were more than brothers, and we remained so for 5 years until the elections were called. It was time to part ways. We got new identities jaluo, mkamba, kaleo, sapere, walalo and Banye. Identifying ourselves with the rich politicians we shared a language with was the thing, not the poor we had been with for years.

The wealthy man from my tribe won the election I headed to the same room I had shared for five years with people of my class, albeit with some election posters to deco our crib. Mheshimiwa headed for Grand Regency to celebrate. That night we slept without food. After a while things came back to normal we were back to sharing everything with Abdi, musyoka Onyango etc. Whenever there was bereavement amongst us, we all attended. Just the poor people. Mheshimiwa was busy on the beach. But when Mheshimiwa got bereaved I mourned for him for weeks, even though I won't be let to go past his gate. When he engaged in Corruption, I defended him fiercely just because he spoke my Language, to cut short.....I voted for mheshimiwa, he lives big but life for me, Onyango, Kimani, Abdi is still the same.

What if we had voted for one of us regardless of his tribe, could life be different??????? Identify with your own true tribe. RICH or POOR are the real tribes of Kenya. However the latter are the Majority and are ruled by the minority. Poor people rise up and fight for your rights Did you know the only common thing between you and your much cherished Mheshimiwa is the language. Nothing else NOTHING!!!!!!!!! But the list of common things you share with Musyoka, Onyango, Abdi is endless.

Think and Educate other Kenyans
